Welcome to Piedmont Virtual, a virtual airline dedicated to the historical aspect of Piedmont Airlines. At Piedmont you will be able to recreate flights using actual timetables from 1948 through 1989, flying only the aircraft that Piedmont Airlines flew, from the DC-3 to the 767's.

In 1948 Piedmont Airlines began operations in North Carolina serving the southeast region. Initial aircraft was the DC-3. Revenue on the short routes made Piedmont Airlines a profitable venture immediately, and in a few years newer, larger equipment were being considered.

Piedmont initially bought six of the new F-27 high wing, turbopropeller aircraft from Fairchild. The price soon escalated and when more aircraft were needed Piedmont opted to purchased Martin 404's from TWA for a fracion of the cost of the F-27's. Eventually the larger F-227 was added to the fleet, as well as the NAMC YS-11 from Japan. Piedmont was the first regional carrier to order the new 737 from Boeing, but took delivery of three 727-100's first until the new 737's arrived. Piedmont opted to keep the 727's and added 727-200's later.

Piedmont's eventually found itself operating 767's across the Atlantic, fed by a substantial national network of routes. In 1989 Piedmont Airlines ceased to exist when they merged with USAir.
